Savitri Amabasya in Jagannath Temple

The amabasya (no moon day) which falls in the Jestha month (according to traditional Hindu calendar) it is termed as Savitri Amavasya or Savitri brat, On this day in each and every odia household like karwa chauth vrat, ladies keep fasting and does puja for the well being of their spouse. In this vrat they worship Devi Savitri, there is an age-old story based on Mahabharata related to Savitri and Satyavan.

In Sri Mandir’s within the inner boundaries(known as kurma bedha, in jagannath temple term) there is a temple dedicated to Devi Bhubaneswari, this temple is also known as Pancha shakti temple and according to the records of rights and Madala Panji of Sri Mandir, Devi Bhubanswari, Saraswati, sasthi, Sabitri, and Gayatri are being worshiped here.

According to Bhramha Puran

Savitri Devi is regarded as Bhramha’s Shakti, the Bhramha shakti pradaini, Dwibhuja and mantra rupa.

द्विभुजानांग भ्रम्हणाः शक्तिंग भ्रम्हशक्तिप्रदायनीम l

सवित्रींग मंत्ररूपांग च स्मरामि तत्प्रदामभुजाम ll

dwibhujanag bhramanah shakting bhramhashaktipradainim l

savitring mantrarupang ca smarami tatpradambhujam ll

In Sri Mandir in the occasion of Savitri Amabasya women’s worship Devi Savitri for the well being of their husband and family. According to the tradition on this day the chief servitor of Lord Jagannatha Pati Mohapatra servitors worship Devi Savitri till afternoon after that the servitor of that temple worship Devi Savitri. In this day in a queue many women came with bangles, sarees, and fruits and offer it near goddess and take it afterward and pray for the well being of their spouse and family.

On this day as a part of Bhitar Chandan Yatra the Jala Krida Utsav of Lord Jagannatha is organized. After the morning Alata lagi seva and chandan lagi seva (Rituals organized during summer) sri Madanmohan is carried unto Ratnasinghasan and there on getting the aagyamala of lord Jagannatha, Sri Manmohan along with Sridevi are carried to the palanquin after the puja in panachaupchar ritual  and from there on they are taken to the Jal krida mandap inside Jagannatha Temple, they goes inside the jala krida tank which has been filled with scented water. After prasadalagi and chandan pichkari rituals from saraghara the drinks(Pana)  known as Pana bhoga and from Raghavdas math sital bhog are brought and then its offered with panchaupar. After that the idols being carried out of the water and dressed with new cloths and flower ornaments and then vandapana is done. Meanwhile when the Sandhya Dhoopa Bhog arrives Sridevi goes back to Ratnasinghasan and Sri Mandanmohan to the Dakshin Ghar of Sri Mandir.
